Week 3 - Families

Families

This week's session was put together by Jeanette and looks at the story of Joseph and his family.

Story

Because of the situation we are in at the moment, I thought it would be good to talk about families. I bet if I asked you to name a family in the bible you would say Josephs’, which is the one I want to talk about.

Jacob had 1 daughter and 12 sons and he loved his family, but he had a favourite and having favourites is not a good idea. His favourite was Joseph.

If you know the story, then you’ll know that Joseph’s brothers were jealous of him – getting good things and nice presents from their dad that none of the others got. Joseph also bragged about having dreams that showed that he would be more important than his brothers, but the brothers didn’t believe him because Joseph was the second youngest son, what made him so important? Jacob’s other sons got so fed up with Joseph that they sold him to some traders and told their Dad that he died!

So, Joseph was taken to Egypt by the traders, where he was put to work as a slave and he did not have a good time. Meanwhile, I think that Joseph’s brothers were sorry for what they did and how it was affecting their father Jacob, who had become terribly sad since being told Joseph was dead, but there was nothing they could do about it now.

Eventually, Joseph had some good fortune because he kept on believing in God all the time that he was a slave, so God rewarded him for his faith.

Then, years later there was a famine in Canaan where Joseph’s family lived, which means that they ran out of food, but they heard that there was plenty in Egypt. Off the brothers went to Egypt and when they got to the palace, Joseph was the one in charge of saying who could have some of the food! Although they had got older, Joseph still recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him. He met with them a few times and finally could not keep it to himself. He had to let them know who he was and to say that he was not angry with them for selling him into slavery, because he knew it was God’s will so that he would be able to save his family when the famine came. He then asked if his father, Jacob was still alive and was very pleased to hear that he was. Joseph then told his brothers to fetch his father and to bring him back to Egypt so that they all could live together again.

Joseph’s life ended up happily, but there were a few bad years in the middle before it turned out happy again. God was looking after him all the time.

Is there anyone in your family that you are having a bad time with at the moment? Have you had an argument with anyone? If not a member of your family, is there a friend that you have had an argument with? If so, when things are bad and we are not allowed to see each other, we should think about these things and make up with that person so that when we are allowed to see each other, we can be friends again and give each other a hug.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, there are so many lessons to be learned from the story of Joseph. It shows us how you love and care for us even when times are difficult. It shows us that we should be loving and forgiving even when we have been treated badly. Help us to apply these lessons to our daily life.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
